Red Dead Redemption Review

When I first read about Rockstar's new Red Dead Redemption game, I thought it sounded a bit too much like a GUN rip off. After checking out a few videos on youtube.com and reviews, I went out and bought the game to see for myself.
The game is so much more than expected. I still stick to my claim that it copies GUN pretty closely, but it takes the games ideas to a whole new level (not to mention amazing graphics).

STORY
I've played GTA4 and loved it, but it got too old too quickly. It seemed like the same things over and over again, and although the initial story was quite interesting it died off pretty quickly. Red Dead Redemption's story itself goes above and beyond that of GTA4 proving it a better game. It took me only 21 hours and 15 minutes to complete the story along with some side missions. I was so pulled in by the story that as soon as I woke up had had to play the game and I played the entire day until I went to bed (given there were interruptions like going out with my friends or eating meals). It had me so hooked that I even was dreaming about the story and the game. The whole time I was trying to figure out for myself what the ending would be, but it wasn't until the last few missions that I realized what exactly was going on. Few video games can keep you guessing and keep you pulled in at the same time, but Red Dead Redemption will for sure satisfy.

GAMEPLAY
I've been hearing a lot of "Red Dead is just GTA4 with a western mask over it," but I have to strongly disagree. Having played both games, Red Dead Redemption feels nothing like GTA4 whatsoever. Sure you have the mini-map in the left corner, but I hardly remembered it as the GTA mini-map after playing Red Dead Redemption long enough. Honestly, the mini-map works so why would they get rid of it?

When it comes to shooting up the town, or whatever you want to do with your gun, you have the option on how the targeting system works. You can change between auto-aim, casual, and expert. Auto-aim is nice when your just trying to get through the story, if your way too outnumbered, or your on horseback. When you  press the left trigger it automatically focuses on an enemy, or wildlife around. It can get frustrating at times when it focuses in on things you don't want it to, but for the most part it is a nice feature. Expert gives you no help at all when it comes to aiming. Which for experienced shooters like myself, is nice. It gets rid of the automatically focusing on random birds flying by and lets you focus at the enemies heads if you wish instead of automatically aiming for their chest. I still haven't tried out casual yet, but I assume it is a mix of both.

Another key point in the game is the market system. Just like in previous Rockstar games you earn money by looting dead bodies and completing missions, but you can now use the money in a nicely crafted system of shops. The shops allow you to buy ammunition, clothing, medicine, new guns, and much more. Also you can spend you money on a stagecoach taxi, buying houses, gambling, drinking, and pretty much anything you can think of (except for prostitutes, for some reason you can't interact with them in the game). The market system gives Red Dead Redemption just one more leg up on GTA and other games that it would be compared to.

MULTIPLAYER

I must say I was very skeptical with all the hype around Red Dead Redemptions improved multiplayer. As I had guessed it doesn't quite live up to the hype, but it is certainly better than Rockstar's other attempts at multiplayer. My biggest problem was definitely the fact that my internet connection has been acting up lately and there is no way to stop trying to connect to an online game. So, every time my system can't connect I have to turn off the game and go back to the main menu. The much anticipated Free Roam isn't much more than the Lobby in GTA4 where you are with a group of people and are free to explore the map. The problem is that the other people shoot you every time you spawn, so unless your playing with friends you might as well not even try it. I will say that the actual game modes are exceptional, and I can't wait until I get my internet working properly again so I can play them more.

OVERALL

Overall the game is a must-have and a possible game of the year. It is undoubtedly the best game I have played, ever. If you don't have the game yet then why are you sitting here reading this? Go out and buy it already!
